Fred Roberts Closes after nearly 140 years of service

Fred Roberts Shop closes after nearly 140 years

The oldest shop in Ellesmere closes today after serving the community of Ellesmere for over a century.

Fred Roberts started out as a printers before developing into a stationary, gifts and newsagents, I think all the people who grew up in Ellesmere will greatly miss all the things that Fred Roberts had to offer, I remember as a child looking forward to my mother taking me into Fred Roberts where going into the back room waas like entering a new world full of toys and gifts. I even had a paper round there as a youngster growing up.

The business has been run by five generations of the same family since it opened in 1872 and the shop has become known as an institution in the town of Ellesmere.
The shop is full of gifts, cards, toys, stationery, china and glass including famous name brands such as Corgi, Wedgwood, and Royal Worcester.
But now owner Debbie Hayward, who runs the shop with her mother Beryl Hewitt, has decided itstime to call it a day, which is in its 139th year of trading.
Mrs Hayward, whose daughter Sarah has also helped out in the shop, said she would miss running the store but thanked customers for their support throughout the years.

She has said the decision to shut the shop was taken for health reasons.
