Ellesmere Market halls big bid to Big Lottery

Shropshire County Council, working in close partnership with local councils and community groups, has submitted a bid to the Big Lottery for the redevelopment of the Market Hall in Ellesmere as an exciting new home for the town’s library, alongside a wide range of other services and facilities.
The application is for £924,000 towards an estimated cost of £1.5m to completely redevelop the prominent building in Scotland Street. The bid has been developed by the County Council’s Library Service, working with a local Steering Group which represents a range of local groups and organisations. The work builds on the results of community consultation undertaken in 2006 by the Ellesmere Economic Development Forum.

If successful, the funding from the Big Lottery Community Libraries scheme will provide Ellesmere and area with greatly improved and extended library, information and computer services, alongside access to council and public services and to a number of other services and facilities, including community learning, youth centre, meeting spaces, and regular information and advice from a range of agencies and organisations. The development will also provide an improved café and a flexible performance and activity space which will continue to be used by the town’s regular market. A mezzanine level and lift will be installed within the hall to accommodate many of the additional services.

Carnival go ahead thanks to local football team

Football club has offer for carnival
Organisers of Ellesmere Carnival have been thrown a lifeline which could save this year’s event, it emerged today.
Ellesmere Rangers Football Club has offered to rescue the carnival by stumping up £500 which organisers need to settle a post-event clean-up bill they claim Shropshire Council wants to charge them.
Dave Coles, club chairman, said: “I was made aware that the carnival was being cancelled. As it brings in an awful lot of revenue to the town I made a number of phone calls to colleagues at the club and other people and got together the £500 on behalf of the club and made the offer to the committee.”
Alan Hinton, from the carnival committee, today welcomed the offer but said it would need to be voted on and warned it might be too late to rescue the carnival.
He said: “This offer came about after telling everyone that the carnival has been postponed until next year.
“Bands and dance troupes may have now already booked to go elsewhere after this news so it will be very difficult to do any kind of U-turn now.”
Mr Hinton added the committee felt strongly about being charged. He said: “The football club worked hard raising this money and it seems wrong to hand it over to the council for an unjust charge.”
Shropshire Council said it has been in discussions with the organisers about introducing fees to cover maintenance costs, but said no fee has been decided on and discussions are ongoing.

Ellesmere Market Hall will receive the long-awaited makeover, paid for with a share of the £13 million saved when Shropshire Council was set up.
Funds for the scheme have already been ring-fenced by Shropshire Council, members of Ellesmere Town Council heard last night.
The project would see the hall in Scotland Street refurbished and a new floor put in. The library and Infolink office would be relocated there.
A cafe, improved disabled access and meeting rooms would also be included.
Councillor Ann Hartley, a town councillor and member of Shropshire Council’s ruling cabinet, said the project would put the town “on the map”.
